2016 Jeep Wrangler problems owners report most
2016 Jeep Wrangler problems are documented in public: owners have filed 462 complaints with NHTSA, the earliest in 2016 and the most recent in 2026. Sorting those by the component the filer named puts the brakes clearly first, at 137 of the 462 complaints, close to a third of everything filed.
A complaint is not a repair bill and not a defect finding. It is one owner telling the regulator something went wrong. What makes the count useful is the concentration: when one component takes 30 per cent of everything filed on a car, the pattern is doing more than chance.
| Component | Complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|
| SERVICE BRAKES | 137 | 30% |
| ENGINE | 88 | 19% |
| AIR BAGS | 77 | 17% |
| POWER TRAIN | 74 | 16% |
| ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | 57 | 12% |
| UNKNOWN OR OTHER | 54 | 12% |
Of those complaints, 28 describe a crash and 15 describe a fire. Filers reported 38 injuries.
Recalls on the 2016 Jeep Wrangler
A recall means the manufacturer or the regulator found a safety defect, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer however old the car is. There are 5 recalls on this model year. Your own car may be covered by some, all or none of them, so check the VIN rather than the model.
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2010 Dodge Ram 3500, Ram 4500/5500, 2010-2011 Dodge Dakota, 2010-2014 Dodge Challenger, 2010-2015 Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300, and 2010-2016 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
The risk. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 4, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V01.
NHTSA advises owners not to drive this vehicle until the repair is done.
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2011-2018 Jeep Wrangler right hand drive vehicles. The driver's seat belt buckle mounting strap may fracture and separate from the seat frame.
The risk. A separated or severed seat belt buckle strap will result in an inoperable seat belt, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
The fix. FCA US will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's seat belt buckle, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed November 19, 2019. Owners will received a second letter and the recall began March 26, 2020. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is VA6.
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured June 16, 2015, to August 14, 2016. In certain crash conditions, the front impact sensor wiring may be pulled until it detaches before a signal can be received by the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC).
The risk. If the ORC module does not receive a signal from the front impact sensor, both frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The fix. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reroute the front impact sensor wiring and relocate the impact sensor branch, free of charge. The recall began on November 10, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S76.
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 Right Hand Drive Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured February 16, 2010, to May 2, 2016. The clockspring assembly may become contaminated with dust and cause the air bag circuit to fail.
The risk. Failure of the air bag circuit may prevent the driver's frontal air bag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The fix. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clockspring, wheel back cover, and column shroud, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S40.
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) (Stellantis) is recalling certain right hand drive 2016 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. Debris contamination may cause the clockspring to fail, preventing the driver's air bag from deploying in a crash.
The risk. An air bag that does not deploy in a crash can increase the risk of injury.
The fix. Dealers will replace the clockspring, steering wheel back cover, and steering column shrouds, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 4, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 27B.
In owners own words
These are complaints filed about the brakes, quoted as written. They are one persons account rather than a diagnosis, and they are here because a symptom described by a driver is easier to recognise than a component name.
VEHICLE NOTIFIED IT HAD A FAULT IN THE ABS/ESC SYSTEM VIA THE YELLOW WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATING ON THE DASH. OCCURRED AFTER STARTING THE CAR AFTER SITTING OVERNIGHT. VEHICLE DROVE NORMALLY AT FIRST AND ASSUMED THIS INDICATED THE SYSTEMS HAD A FAULT AND WERE THUS DISABLED. HOWEVER, VEHICLE STARTED TO LOSE POWER, STUMBLE, AND NOT ACCELERATE WHEN MOVING FROM DEAD STOP. INCLUDING STOP LIGHTS, STOP SIGNS, CROSSING DIVIDED HIGHWAYS AND INTERSECTIONS--TURNING AND STRAIGHT TRAVEL. PAVEMENT CONDITIONS WERE DRY/LEVEL, NO WHEEL SPIN OCCURRED. 3 OCCASIONS OVER 2 DAYS RESULTED IN NEAR ACCIDENTS
BETWEEN 41,258 MILES AND LESS THAN 43,000 MILES, FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS LOCKED UP. HUSBAND THROWN FORWARD TOWARD WINDSHIELD -- WITHOUT APPLYING THE BRAKES -- AT CITY DRIVING SPEED BUT WAS SAVED BY HIS SEATBELT FROM GOING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD. IT ALSO FELT LIKE THE BRAKES WERE VERY GRABBY EARLIER ON THAT TRIP AND MORE ACCELERATION WAS NEEDED TO MAKE THE CAR TRAVEL FORWARD AS THE WHEELS SEEMED NOT TO MOVE FREELY, LIKE THEY WERE BEING HELD BACK. ROTORS SEVERELY SCORED, COULDN'T BE MACHINED. BOTH FRONT CALIPERS, ROTORS, HOSES, PADS, LINES, FLUIDS ALL REQUIRED REPLACEMENT ACCORDING TO KOONS TYS
The ABS Module (Part 68259556AD) on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler began failing about two years ago. When the ABS warning light turns on, both the ABS and traction-control systems stop functioning, creating a serious safety hazard: greatly increased stopping distance, reduced steering control under braking, and higher risk of loss of control on wet or slippery roads. The warnings, once intermittent, are now continuously illuminated, meaning the vehicle has no working ABS or traction control at any time. Performance Jeep of Somerville (Somerville, NJ) inspected the vehicle around September 2023 and con
*The ABS alert is on and it is disabling the antilock breaking system. The dealership has inspected the vehicle. *The safety at hand is that my antilock breaking system is not working. I was told that there is a chance if I had to break suddenly, the vehicle ABS will not work and the breaks will lock up, causing me to skid. They cautioned me to pump the breaks in the event I need to suddenly stop. *The Dealer has confirmed that this module is broken. They have inspected the vehicle and they were the ones who provided me with this information. *I was told the ABS module is inoperable at thi

How other model years compare
The same nameplate across the years we hold. Complaint counts fall naturally for newer cars because fewer of them have been on the road for long, so read the column as a rough signal rather than a ranking. In this set the 2018 Jeep Wrangler has drawn the most complaints and the 2017 Jeep Wrangler the fewest.
What to check on the brakes
Brake reports describe a pedal that goes soft or sinks, longer stopping distances, and a judder through the pedal under firm braking. Some describe the car braking by itself where an automatic system is fitted.
Buying a used 2016 Wrangler
Brake hard from speed on an empty road. Pads and discs are a normal wear item and cheap to replace, so a judder is not a reason to walk away. A pedal that sinks under steady pressure is a different matter.
If you already own one
Have the fluid tested, not just the pads. Brake fluid absorbs water as it ages and a soft pedal is more often old fluid than a failed part. A fluid change costs far less than a caliper.
- Brake firmly from speed to feel for judder or a sinking pedal.
- Have the brake fluid moisture content tested.
- Check pad and disc thickness against the service limit, not by eye.
- Ask for a quote separating pads, discs, fluid and labour.
Where the 2016 Jeep Wrangler problem data comes from
Every figure on this page is counted from complaints and recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, read November 1, 2026. Complaints are filed by owners and are not verified by the agency before publication. We count each complaint once per component it names, so a complaint naming two components appears in both rows.
