2017 Toyota Corolla problems owners report most
2017 Toyota Corolla problems are documented in public: owners have filed 189 complaints with NHTSA, the earliest in 2017 and the most recent in 2026. Sorting those by the component the filer named puts the airbags clearly first, at 57 of the 189 complaints, close to a third of everything filed.
A complaint is not a repair bill and not a defect finding. It is one owner telling the regulator something went wrong. What makes the count useful is the concentration: when one component takes 30 per cent of everything filed on a car, the pattern is doing more than chance.
| Component | Complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|
| AIR BAGS | 57 | 30% |
| UNKNOWN OR OTHER | 33 | 17% |
| VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL | 30 | 16% |
| SERVICE BRAKES | 26 | 14% |
| ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | 21 | 11% |
| POWER TRAIN | 17 | 9% |
Against the 2016 car, this model year has drawn 12 per cent fewer complaints (189 against 214). Both years are led by the airbags, so this is a fault that carried over rather than one introduced with the 2017 car.
Of those complaints, 47 describe a crash and 1 describes a fire. Filers reported 44 injuries.
Recalls on the 2017 Toyota Corolla
A recall means the manufacturer or the regulator found a safety defect, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer however old the car is. There are 3 recalls on this model year. Your own car may be covered by some, all or none of them, so check the VIN rather than the model.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
The risk. In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
The fix. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Toyota Camry, Corolla, Rav4, Sienna, and Yaris iA vehicles equipped with factory-installed floor mats. The load carrying capacity modification label may be incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
The risk. An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix. SET will notify owners and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. SET's number for this recall is SET19A.
Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (Gulf States) is recalling certain 2017 4Runner , 86, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla iM, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius C, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Sienna and Yaris vehicles. The spare tire air pressure was not adjusted to the proper pressure as stated on the Tire Pressure Label.
The risk. A spare tire that is not inflated to the proper value may not perform as intended, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix. Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spare tires, adjusting their pressure as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074. Toyota's number for this recall is 17R2.
In owners own words
These are complaints filed about the airbags, quoted as written. They are one persons account rather than a diagnosis, and they are here because a symptom described by a driver is easier to recognise than a component name.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Corolla. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V024000 (Air Bags). The contact stated that while driving at 15-20 MPH, the forward collision avoidance feature failed to alert her of vehicles ahead. The contact swerved the vehicle, crashing into the bridge wall. The air bags did not deploy. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact suffered bruising and neck pain, but no medical attention was received. While I was driving in the middle lane through an intersection, a car from the opposite side failed to yield while turning and hit me on my driver's side. My car was traveling at approximately 35 MPH, and the other vehicle was exceeding the speed limit. The impact caused my car to veer in the opposite direction and I lost consciousness immediately. The fire department had to extract me from the passenger side door as my driver's side door was jammed shut. Both the driver's door and the rear door on that side cannot be opened, rendering the car undriveable and necessitating towing from the cras
I WAS DRIVING HOME ON HAMILTON ROAD, IN COLUMBUS, OHIO, AT 535PM. I NOTICED THAT MY HEADLIGHTS WEREN'T ON, WHEN OTHER DRIVERS WERE TRYING TO WORN ME. I SET MY HEADLIGHTS ON AUTOMATIC WHEN I FIRST RECEIVED THE CAR. I FINALLY FOUND THE SWITCH TO TURN MY HEADLIGHTS ON MANUALLY. THEN MY CAR STARTED TO BRAKE 10-15 FEET FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, MY TIRES WERE SQUEALING. MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WAS STILL ON THE ACCELERATOR. IT WAS TOO LATE I HIT THE SUV IN FRONT ME. MY AIR BAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. THE ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE SYSTEM DIDN'T ACTIVATE UNTIL TO LATE. IT IS CLEAR THAT THE CA

How other model years compare
The same nameplate across the years we hold. Complaint counts fall naturally for newer cars because fewer of them have been on the road for long, so read the column as a rough signal rather than a ranking. In this set the 2020 Toyota Corolla has drawn the most complaints and the 2018 Toyota Corolla the fewest.
What to check on the airbags and restraints
Airbag reports are mostly about the warning light staying on, the passenger seat deciding nobody is sitting in it, or a bag that did not deploy in a crash. The light is the part owners see. The sensor behind it is the part that matters.
Buying a used 2017 Corolla
Watch the airbag light at startup. It should come on, then go out. A light that never comes on at all is as much of a warning as one that stays lit, because it can mean the bulb was removed to hide a fault.
If you already own one
Treat this as urgent rather than cosmetic. A restraint fault does nothing at all until the one moment it matters, and the repair is sometimes covered by a recall. Check the VIN before paying anything.
- Watch the airbag light cycle on then off at startup.
- Check the VIN against open airbag recalls first.
- Test the passenger occupancy sensor with someone sitting there.
- Ask whether any restraint part has been replaced after a crash.
Where the 2017 Toyota Corolla problem data comes from
Every figure on this page is counted from complaints and recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, read October 12, 2026. Complaints are filed by owners and are not verified by the agency before publication. We count each complaint once per component it names, so a complaint naming two components appears in both rows.
