You are buying service intervals, not plugs

Copper sits at a median of $8.49 and iridium at $15.49. Looked at per plug, copper wins by a wide margin and the decision looks obvious.

It is the wrong way round. Copper plugs are usually replaced around every 30,000 miles and iridium plugs run three to four times longer. Across the life of the car the cheaper plug is bought three or four times, and fitted three or four times.

The exception matters. Some engines are designed around copper and some around iridium, and fitting the wrong one causes misfires rather than savings. The handbook settles it in one line.

Choosing plugs for your engine

Start with what the handbook specifies. Electrode metal, heat range and gap are engine design decisions, not preferences, and a plug outside spec runs badly.

Count the cylinders and multiply. Most of these listings are priced per plug, so a four cylinder engine needs four and a V8 needs eight. The per-plug price is the smaller half of the decision.

Pre-gapped is not always correctly gapped. Check the gap against the handbook with a feeler gauge before fitting, because shipping knocks them.

Replace the whole set at once. One new plug among seven old ones runs unevenly and tells you nothing about whether the fault is fixed.
