An oil filter catches particles in engine oil. That is the whole job, and this shelf prices it from $5.99 to $98.99.

STP sits at the bottom from around $6 and aFe reaches $99. The money buys filter media that flows better and holds more, a stronger anti-drainback valve and a case built for higher pressure. On a car driven to work and serviced on schedule, none of that is reached.

Where it does earn its money: long oil change intervals, towing, track use, and turbocharged engines that heat the oil harder. For everything else, the own-brand filter changed on time is the better buy.

Choosing a filter

Fitment first, price second. An oil filter has to match the thread, the gasket diameter and the bypass pressure your engine expects. A cheaper filter that does not seal costs an engine.

Change it with every oil change without exception. A new filter with old oil, or old filter with new oil, defeats the point of either.
